Occupying around 27 acres on the north‑west shore of the Isle of Dogs, the Millwall Iron Works boasted approximately 1,900 feet of river frontage, including slipways, foundries, forges, sawmills and engineering workshops. By the mid‑1860s it employed 4,000–5,000 men, making it one of the largest industrial employers in Britain. Although shuttered after the financial crash of 1866, its legacy survives in both London’s historic landscape and the modern riverside development of Burrells Wharf.
