A rare and fascinating view of two Cold War–era warships berthed side by side on the Thames in 1979. In the foreground is the preserved HMS Belfast, the Royal Navy Town-class cruiser. Moored alongside her is the Dutch destroyer HNLMS Overijssel (D815), one of the Holland-class anti-submarine ships of the Royal Netherlands Navy. Her visit to London in 1979 was part of a goodwill and training tour, and photographs of the two ships together are relatively uncommon.
Behind them rises the unmistakable skyline of late-1970s London Bridge, still dominated by concrete modernist office blocks and riverside warehouses awaiting redevelopment. Tower cranes hint at the building boom that would eventually transform the area in the 1980s and 1990s.
