This 1969 view from the Thames looks north towards St Paul’s Cathedral, its great dome and west front rising above a ragged strip of riverside buildings, wharves and demolition sites along the City waterfront. In front of the cathedral, the river edge still has a notably rough working character, with broken terraces, cleared plots, cranes and temporary structures showing how much of this part of the north bank remained in transition decades after wartime destruction. The foreground excursion boat, crowded with passengers and ringed with lifebelts, adds another strong period detail and underlines the Thames’ continuing role as both a working river and a sightseeing route. It is a striking record of a lost stretch of waterfront London, where St Paul’s still towered over a battered and partly industrial riverside before later office redevelopment reshaped the scene.
