Biggin Street, Dover, Kent, 1956

Prominent on the right is Boots the Chemists, with striped awnings advertising in-store film developing and printing, a relatively new service in the 1950s that helped establish Boots as a national name in photography and retail.

Adjacent is Bata, the Czech-founded shoe retailer that expanded rapidly across British high streets in the post-war years, known for affordable and durable footwear. Further along the street are a range of traditional independent shops, including jewellers, outfitters, tobacconists, and tearooms, reflecting the specialised retail character typical of British town centres before the rise of supermarkets and large chains.
