This authentic 1970s colour photograph, captured in 1971, features the innovative Dover Stage Hotel on the seafront in Dover, Kent. The archival image documents this notable example of modernist architecture, designed by Louis Erdi and opened in 1959 specifically to cater to the burgeoning cross-channel ferry tourist market. The six-storey building is characterized by its tiered private balconies for every room and its “floating” appearance atop a ground-floor glass pavilion. In the foreground, a bright orange Austin 1100 with the registration VFN 341J is parked near a manicured lawn and palm trees, while the historic white-fronted RAC hotel building and the grassy slopes of the Eastern Heights are visible in the background. Despite its status as a landmark of post-war design, the hotel was eventually demolished in 1988 to make way for new developments. This factual record preserves the unique visual identity of the Dover Stage Hotel during 1971, showcasing a significant chapter in Britain’s mid-century coastal hospitality history.
