Dover Marine station in 1982, with a railwayman stepping down from a blue and grey coach beneath the great iron-and-glass trainshed of the former boat-train terminus. The photograph is full of useful detail, from the open slam doors and red no-smoking notices inside the carriage to the smartly dressed member of staff holding paperwork on the platform. Above, the immense curving roof trusses and glazed panels show just how ambitious the station’s architecture was, even in this closer, more intimate view. By this date the station was officially Dover Western Docks, but scenes like this still capture the atmosphere of the old Dover Marine era, when rail and sea travel were closely linked and the station remained one of the most distinctive termini on the south coast.
