The Portmeirion Hotel is at the heart of one of Wales’s most unusual and captivating destinations. Overlooking the Dwyryd Estuary in Gwynedd, this elegant hotel forms part of the surreal, Italianate village of Portmeirion—created by the visionary architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis in the early 20th century.
Originally opened in 1926, the hotel was one of the earliest buildings in Portmeirion and played a central role in Williams-Ellis’s dream of creating a coastal resort that harmonised with its natural surroundings. The hotel was fashioned from a former mansion on the site, with later additions and architectural flourishes in keeping with the village’s eclectic style. Over the years, it has hosted a long list of notable guests, drawn by its peaceful setting, artistic atmosphere, and beautiful views across the estuary.
Among those to have stayed were members of The Beatles. George Harrison visited Portmeirion in 1993 to celebrate his 50th birthday, and it’s believed that both Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr also spent time there in the 1960s, along with Beatles manager Brian Epstein their music producer George Martin. Their interest in the village was likely inspired by its otherworldly charm, which also attracted many creatives and musicians during that period.
The hotel today retains much of its original charm and character. It offers a range of elegantly styled rooms, many with estuary views, and serves fine dining in its waterfront restaurant. Guests can also explore the wider village, with its gardens, woodland trails, and colourful architecture that give Portmeirion its unmistakable identity.
