Portmeirion in 1978, looking down over the village’s formal central piazza with its long ornamental pool, clipped lawns, flower beds, statues, terraces and Italianate buildings set against dense woodland. The view is packed with recognisable Portmeirion detail, from the domed garden feature in the foreground and the broad flight of steps to the colonnaded, decorative building at right and the painted façades and garden structures beyond. Designed by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis and built up over many decades, Portmeirion was intended as a deliberately theatrical Mediterranean-style village on the Welsh coast, and this elevated view shows that mixture especially well, combining carefully staged architecture, sub-tropical planting and the relaxed atmosphere of a North Wales visitor attraction in the late 1970s.
