This 1974 view captures the famous entrance passage to Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese on Fleet Street, with its hanging sign declaring Rebuilt 1667 and a small crowd of drinkers gathered outside in the tight alley-like approach. The dark timber frontage, old noticeboards and worn brick surroundings give the scene a notably atmospheric feel, while deeper in the passage another painted sign refers to an ancient cigar store, adding to the layered commercial character of this corner of old Fleet Street. The photograph works especially well as a record of the pub’s tucked-away setting: not a grand street frontage, but a narrow, half-hidden survivor in the midst of the printing and newspaper district. It catches the place before later heritage presentation softened some of the rougher everyday texture that still clung to this part of Fleet Street in the 1970s.
