Ye Olde Charles Inn stood on Northdown Road, Cliftonville, just outside Margate, Kent, and was a long-standing local landmark with a distinctive black-and-white mock-Tudor façade. It was built in 1926 by Russell’s Brewery of Gravesend as an interwar “improved pub,” aimed at attracting motorists and holidaymakers during Margate’s boom years.
During the Second World War, the pub was popular with airmen from nearby RAF Manston, adding to its local character. In the post-war decades it remained a community hub, and actor John Le Mesurier was known to drink there while visiting Hattie Jacques, who lived nearby.
Renamed The Holly Tree in 2013, the pub closed in 2016 after declining trade. A major fire in April 2017, following an earlier kitchen fire in 2014, left the building beyond repair, and it was subsequently demolished.
The site was redeveloped as Charles Court, completed in 2022, with flats, houses, and ground-floor commercial space.
