Woodcourt Hotel, Wythenshawe 1970s

This authentic 1970s colour photograph captures the Woodcourt Hotel on Brooklands Road in Wythenshawe, Manchester, during its final decades of operation. The archival image documents the Victorian grand residence, originally built in 1894 for the Kilvert family—prominent owners of the Kilvert’s Lard firm—before its conversion into a hotel and public house. The architecture is typical of late 19th-century Manchester industrialist homes, featuring decorative red-brick masonry, tall gables, and elegant arched sash windows. In the 1970s, the hotel was a well-known local landmark and social hub within the Wythenshawe area, situated amidst mature trees and landscaped gardens. Despite its local historical significance and organized protests from the Brooklands Residents’ Association, the building was not listed and was eventually demolished in the late 1990s to make way for a four-storey block of residential flats.
