This 1980 night photograph shows the famous Windmill Theatre on Great Windmill Street in Soho, its distinctive windmill-shaped neon sign blazing above the street with the name WINDMILL and the words WINDMILL THEATRE picked out in red lights. The illuminated panels advertise Rip Off!, while next door the frontage carries a large Lyric Theatre billboard promoting a production presented by John Gale and starring Richard Briers and Paul Eddington. The Windmill had been one of Soho’s best-known theatres since the 1930s, first for revue and later for nude tableau shows, and by 1980 its glowing sign remained one of the area’s most recognisable pieces of night-time street theatre. This is a strong record of old Soho after dark, with the famous neon windmill still dominating the street in the years before the building’s later reinvention as the Windmill International.
