This 1985 photograph shows the Wimpy restaurant at 425 Oxford Street, directly opposite Selfridges, with its bold red fascia, projecting Wimpy Hamburgers signs and broad glass frontage opening onto one of London’s busiest shopping streets. Period details include the interior sign reading “Seating available downstairs”, a burger poster inside the window, and a Standard newspaper box outside carrying the slogans “Everyone needs standards” and “London’s standard classified” with the telephone number 35 35 000. The scene is a strong record of Oxford Street fast-food culture in the mid-1980s, when Wimpy still had a major presence here; at one point there were at least five Wimpy branches along Oxford Street, and most were later converted into Burger King restaurants during the 1990s, including this one. That later Burger King has since closed as well, making this an especially useful record of a vanished stage in the changing commercial history of Oxford Street.
