This 1984 photograph shows Centre Court at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, seen empty before play with its closely striped grass surface being rolled by a groundsman. The image captures the court in its pre-roof era, with the steep banks of green seating, dark supporting columns and the open-sided grandstands giving Centre Court the look it retained for decades before the retractable roof was added in the twenty-first century. A manually operated scoreboard can be seen on the right-hand side, while the absence of crowds makes the maintenance and preparation work unusually prominent. It is a strong behind-the-scenes view of Wimbledon’s most famous court, showing the quiet, carefully groomed setting that would soon be filled for the Championships. Wimbledon’s official history confirms the long continuity of Centre Court as the Championships’ main arena and records the later major changes to the grounds in the modern era.
