This 1984 photograph shows an Austin Ambassador entering the All England Lawn Tennis Club at Wimbledon, with the ivy-clad stands and club buildings beyond the gates. Registration FKV 501Y places the car firmly in the early 1980s, while the hatchback shape and squared-off rear identify it as the Ambassador, British Leyland’s updated replacement for the Austin Princess. Although closely related to the Princess beneath the skin, the Ambassador brought a more practical hatchback body and a tidier revised front end, making it one of the final developments of that familiar large front-wheel-drive family line. The uniformed attendant, formal entrance gates and unmistakable Wimbledon setting give the image a strong sense of occasion, turning an ordinary British saloon into part of a very recognisable social and sporting scene.
