A 1960s colour photo of the industrial South Bank of the River Thames in 1962, featuring the prominent building of “Willcox Hoses” (W.H. Willcox & Co. Ltd). This site, located on Bankside, was historically significant for its manufacturing links but has since been transformed; it is now the location of the world-famous Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. To the right, scaffolding is visible on the Bankside Power Station, a massive industrial structure designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott that was later decommissioned and converted into the Tate Modern art gallery. In the foreground, several heavy wooden Thames barges are moored on the mud at low tide, capturing the gritty, working-river atmosphere of London during the latter half of the 20th century.
