This 1985 photograph looks south from Trafalgar Square down Whitehall, with the towers of the Palace of Westminster rising in the distance beyond a busy junction full of mid-1980s London traffic. Searchable street details include the directional road sign pointing to Parliament Square and Piccadilly Circus, the corner premises of Apollo Foods & Wines with its adjoining dispensing chemist, and a blue Cityrama open-top sightseeing bus advertising tours in several languages. The traffic mix is equally period-specific, with black cabs, a red saloon, a silver coupe and a yellow van all crowding the lights, while one taxi carries a Nationwide Building Society advert reading “It pays to decide”. Altogether it is a strong everyday record of Whitehall before the area’s later security changes and streetscape alterations, when this approach from Trafalgar Square still felt heavily trafficked and distinctly workaday.
