This 1973 view along Whitehall captures the entrance to Horse Guards in everyday use, with mounted Household Cavalry sentries standing outside the arches while office workers, cyclists and pedestrians move along the pavement beside them. The long façade of Horse Guards runs away on the left, and in the hazy distance Nelson’s Column and the buildings around Trafalgar Square can be seen beyond the line of street lamps. Red London buses add strong period detail, including a route 3 bus showing Camden Town, while the red pillar box, parked cars and formal black railings help fix the scene firmly in central London of the early 1970s. The photograph neatly contrasts ceremonial London with ordinary weekday life, where guards on horseback, commuters in suits and passing buses all shared the same stretch of Whitehall.
