This 1977 view of the Westmoreland Hotel on Lodge Road captures a very typical late-1970s London streetscape, with the dark slab-like hotel block rising behind the older white-painted Courage Tavern frontage at street level. The signs for The Westmoreland Hotel and Tavern Courage are both clearly visible, while a red double-decker bus, Belisha beacons, zebra crossing and a line of period cars animate the broad junction in front. The contrast between the surviving lower pub building and the much larger modern hotel behind gives the scene a layered character, showing how older roadside London was often absorbed into post-war redevelopment rather than swept away entirely. The hotel is now known as the Danubius Hotel Regents Park, but in 1977 this corner of St John’s Wood still had the slightly austere, traffic-dominated look of a modern urban hotel set beside a traditional London tavern.
