This 1971 view of Westminster Pier captures the riverside landing stage in everyday use, with passengers gathered outside the pale-blue pier building beneath the bold WESTMINSTER PIER sign. Above, more people line the parapet of the Victoria Embankment to watch the river traffic below, while the mix of jackets, ties and coats gives the scene a distinctly early-1970s feel. Rather than showing Westminster’s grand landmarks, the photograph focuses on the more ordinary business of the Thames as a working and passenger route, recording a side of central London that sat somewhere between transport hub, tourist departure point and riverside promenade. The present Westminster Millennium Pier on this site dates from the 2000 Thames regeneration works, replacing the older pier arrangement seen here.
