This 1970 photograph of Westminster Abbey focuses on the great west front, with its twin towers rising above Broad Sanctuary and scaffolding wrapped around the tower on the right during repair work. The darkened stonework still shows the effects of decades of London soot, giving the façade a far grittier appearance than it has today, while the great clock, Gothic tracery and heavy buttressing stand out clearly in this close view. At street level, a line of period vehicles includes the red Ford Prefect in the foreground, helping to place the scene firmly in everyday London rather than the ceremonial city of postcards. It is a strong record of the Abbey before later cleaning and restoration transformed the appearance of one of Britain’s most recognisable churches.
