This authentic 1970s colour photograph, captured in 1972, features an elevated view of the historic West Pier in Brighton, East Sussex. The archival image documents the intricate Victorian engineering of Eugenius Birch’s Grade I listed masterpiece, showcasing the long promenade deck supported by a forest of cast-iron screw piles. The composition focuses on the mid-section and the large grand pavilion at the pierhead, which remained a prominent feature of the coastline despite the closure of the pierhead to the public a year prior. On the deck in the foreground, a distinctive orange and white striped inflatable dome provides a splash of 1970s colour against the muted tones of the shingle beach and the grey-green waters of the English Channel. The photograph also captures the lower promenade and a small section of a boating pool on the shore. This factual record preserves the architectural grandeur of the West Pier during the early 1970s, three years before its final closure to the public in 1975.
