This 1983 view looks north along Wellesley Road from George Street, showing Croydon at the height of its late twentieth-century office-boom landscape. The sunken dual carriageway is still relatively clear in the foreground, with a scooter, a small hatchback and a red van heading north, while the service roads on either side are much more tightly packed with traffic including a Leyland lorry on the right. Towering office slabs line both sides of the road, and the skyline ahead is filled with cranes and new construction, underlining how rapidly central Croydon was still changing at the time. Searchable street details include the large Fray Bentos roadside billboard on the left, signage for Scottish Mutual House, and the YMCA sign visible on the right-hand side. It is a strong record of Wellesley Road before later redesigns, capturing the hard-edged urban character that made this stretch of Croydon feel more like a developing business district than a traditional town centre.
