This 1983 photograph looks north along Wellesley Road in Croydon towards the Poplar Walk and Bedford Park turning, with Lunar House prominent on the left and a major new office development rising behind the roadway on the right. The building under construction was the former headquarters of British Telecom’s Southern London District, its concrete frame, partially clad elevations and tower cranes showing central Croydon in the middle of another major redevelopment phase. In the foreground is a bright red Ford Transit van for New Roads Ltd, Public Works Contractors, complete with the Croydon telephone number painted on the side, while other period details include a green double-decker bus, signs for Trusthouse Forte Hotels, a Lunar House Home Office Public Enquiry Office sign, and roadside posters including Subway and Marlboro. It is a particularly strong record of Wellesley Road at a time when Croydon’s office core was still expanding rapidly, with construction sites, traffic and corporate signage giving the area its distinctly hard-edged early-1980s character.
