This 1983 photograph looks east along Wellesley Court Road in Croydon towards Southern House on Wellesley Grove, with a striking mix of everyday cars and contrasting architecture. Parked nearest the camera is a green Mini, a 1962 model, followed by another Mini in yellow and a dark Renault Fuego with the registration CGP 103X. Across the road sits a detached red-brick house that looks increasingly hemmed in by later office development, while the large slab-like façade of Southern House fills the background on the left, underlining how dramatically this part of Croydon had changed by the early 1980s. The combination of surviving older buildings, post-war commercial redevelopment and period cars makes this a strong everyday record of central Croydon at street level.
