Waterloo station in 1987, with the busy concourse packed with travellers beneath the great iron roof and the prominent red platform letters for E and F hanging beside the station clock. The scene is full of late-1980s detail, from the crowds in suits, skirts and casual jackets to the rows of shops and kiosks lining the concourse, including branches of Coca-Cola, Photo Processing and Royal Insurance advertising. Overhead signs point towards the Underground, tickets, travel centre and information, while the long perspective through the station captures Waterloo as a bustling interchange at the height of the British Rail era. It is a vivid everyday view of one of London’s busiest termini, showing the commercial clutter, heavy footfall and unmistakable atmosphere of a major station before later modernisation changed the concourse again.
