Waterloo station in 1987, capturing the busy concourse beneath the great steel roof with crowds moving between the departure boards, ticket office and station entrances in a very recognisable late-1980s London scene. The photograph is rich in period detail, including the large overhead sign pointing towards the parcels point, buses, taxis and Waterloo East, the “Photo-Me” booth, the Underground and Tickets signs, the NatWest logo in the distance, and the long line of station offices and shopfronts running along the right-hand side. The mix of business travellers, shoppers, families with prams, station staff and luggage gives the scene a strong everyday feel, while the open concourse and layered signage show Waterloo as one of the capital’s great railway terminals in the years before its later rebuilding and Eurostar era alterations.
