This authentic 1950s colour photograph captures the Waterloo Air Terminal on York Road, South Bank, during its brief but significant period of operation. Originally constructed as the Station Gate entrance for the 1951 Festival of Britain, the building was repurposed in 1953 to serve as the primary London check-in point for British European Airways (BEA). The image showcases the terminal’s unique modernist architecture, characterised by a series of prominent parabolic arches supporting a glazed roof. A large “BEA” logo is visible on the brown brick facade, while a classic red double-decker bus and several airport coaches are seen nearby. Passengers would check in here before being transported to the airport by bus, or occasionally by helicopter from the nearby South Bank heliport. This archival print records a landmark that was demolished in 1957 to make way for new office buildings, making it a rare resource for transport historians or as a piece of nostalgic mid-century wall art.
