This authentic 1950s colour photograph provides a rear view of the Waterloo Air Terminal on London’s South Bank. The image highlights the distinctive modernist architecture of the terminal, specifically the large parabolic arches that supported the roof of the former Station Gate entrance from the 1951 Festival of Britain. In the foreground, a vast open concrete area is visible, which served as a helipad for shuttle flights to the airport, though it previously housed various exhibits during the Festival. Several vintage cars are parked to the left, and a large passenger coach is stationed near the building’s entrance. The spire of a distant church and the “WATERLOO” signage on an adjacent building can be seen against the pale sky. This archival print is a rare record of London’s early post-war aviation infrastructure and the repurposing of Festival of Britain structures, making it an excellent resource for transport historians or as a unique piece of nostalgic wall art.
