This 1987 view from the NatWest Tower looks west across the City of London, with the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral dominating the right side of the skyline above a dense patchwork of offices, rooftops and surviving church towers. The Thames curves away through the middle distance, crossed by a sequence of central London bridges, while beyond them the outline of Westminster and the Houses of Parliament can be picked out through the haze on the horizon. In the foreground, the lower City is still filled with flat-roofed office blocks, cranes and post-war commercial buildings, capturing a London skyline that was already modernised but still lacked many of the later landmarks that would transform it in the 1990s and 2000s. It is a wide and particularly useful record of central London from above, showing the relationship between the historic City, St Paul’s, the Thames crossings and the government quarter further upstream.
