This 1987 view from the NatWest Tower looks west across the City of London towards the River Thames, capturing a dense spread of office rooftops, church domes and bridges before the later wave of riverside redevelopment transformed the scene. Near the centre-left stands the Monument, its gilded flame clearly visible above the surrounding buildings, while the green dome of St Stephen Walbrook can also be picked out lower down among the rooftops. Beyond, a bridge carries steady traffic over the Thames towards the South Bank, where the skyline is dominated by post-war office blocks and tall towers, including the dark mass of King’s Reach Tower on the left. The image is a strong record of late-1980s London from above, showing the old City churchscape hemmed in by modern commercial blocks and the river still bordered by a harder, less polished urban landscape than the one seen today.
