This 1984 view from the Monument looks south over St Magnus the Martyr, the Wren church beside London Bridge whose white tower and dark spire rise above a tightly packed foreground of rooftops and scaffolding. Behind the church the River Thames is busy with a passing passenger boat, while across the water the darker modern towers of the South Bank skyline stand in marked contrast to the historic church and the older City buildings around it. The large scaffold-wrapped structure to the right and the clutter of building work below underline how much of this part of the City was still being altered in the early 1980s. It is a strong record of the protected southward view from the Monument, with St Magnus still acting as the key historic foreground landmark above Lower Thames Street and the river beyond.
