This 1984 view from the Monument looks across a changing City of London skyline of tall office blocks, dense rooftops and a major construction site crowded with cranes. The scene is dominated by hard-edged late twentieth-century towers, while in the middle a large steel frame is still rising above the surrounding buildings, capturing the Square Mile in the middle of another redevelopment phase. Lower down, older stone and brick rooftops, mansards and service blocks survive in the foreground, giving a strong contrast between the historic city and the commercial skyline that was reshaping it in the 1970s and 1980s. It is a particularly good record of the City as a place of constant rebuilding, where new towers and construction cranes had become just as characteristic as the older streets below.
