A 1960s colour photo taken from the top of the Monument in 1963, looking west and north-west across the heart of the City of London during the latter half of the 20th century. The high-angle perspective captures the bustling junction where King William Street meets Cannon Street and Gracechurch Street. Prominent in the view is the grand, Art Deco facade of Adelaide House on the left, which was the City’s first steel-framed skyscraper. At the junction, a variety of period vehicles, including red double-decker buses and black Austin taxis, navigate the roads. Looking further west, the distinctive towers of the City’s Wren churches, such as St Mary Abchurch and the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral, rise above the dense collection of stone and brick commercial buildings.
