Looking west from the Barbican in 1975, this wide view stretches across the dense rooftops of Bloomsbury, Fitzrovia and Marylebone, with the Post Office Tower standing prominently on the skyline near the centre. The long band of trees in the middle distance marks Regent’s Park, and the pale green dome to the left of the tower appears to be the London Planetarium beside Madame Tussauds. The photograph has a distinctly pre-redevelopment feel, with terraces, warehouses, institutional buildings and post-war office blocks packed tightly together beneath a skyline still dominated by one great communications tower rather than the glass clusters that would come later. It is a strong documentary view of inner London in the mid-1970s, showing how low-rise and soot-darkened much of the capital still looked beyond the City.
