This 1983 view from St Paul’s Cathedral looks south across the Thames towards Bankside Power Station, whose great brick bulk and single central chimney dominate the middle distance. Closed only a short time before this photograph was taken, the power station still stood as one of the largest industrial buildings on the river, years before its conversion into Tate Modern. To the left, the line of Blackfriars Bridge crosses the Thames, while the foreground is filled with a patchwork of riverfront offices, wharves, car parks and piers that gave this stretch of the City and South Bank a much rougher, more workaday appearance than it has today. The image is especially valuable as a record of central London in transition, with post-industrial Bankside still intact, the Thames lined by modest commercial buildings, and the wider skyline beyond still comparatively low and open by modern standards.
