This 1983 view from St Paul’s Cathedral looks west along the Thames, with Blackfriars Bridge crossing the river in the foreground and Waterloo Bridge further upstream beyond it. The South Bank skyline is dominated by the tall Shell Centre tower and the long office blocks around it, while the river bends away towards Westminster under a sky of heavy, broken cloud. In the foreground are the rooftops, car parks and service buildings of the north bank before this stretch was so heavily redeveloped, giving the whole scene a much rougher and more workaday character than it has today. It is a strong record of central London before the later transformation of the South Bank, when Shell Centre still ruled the skyline and the riverside around Blackfriars and Waterloo remained far less polished than it is now.
