Looking down from St Paul’s in 1978, this view centres on St Nicholas Cole Abbey, its pale tower and dark spire standing out against the post-war office blocks and pedestrian plazas of the rebuilt City. The foreground shows a hard-landscaped open square with flower beds, benches and pavement seating, while beyond the church the view runs south-west towards the Thames and Blackfriars Bridge. The scene neatly captures the contrast that defined this part of London in the 1970s: a restored Wren church surviving among modern commercial redevelopment, raised walkways and large office buildings. St Nicholas Cole Abbey had been badly damaged in the Blitz and was rebuilt after the war, making it one of the City churches whose reappearance helped preserve fragments of older London within an area otherwise heavily reshaped by twentieth-century planning.
