This 1972 photograph looks out from St Paul’s Cathedral across a central London skyline already being reshaped by post-war redevelopment. In the foreground is St Martin Ludgate, its white Wren tower standing out among the surrounding office blocks, while further off the tall dark slab at left is likely Centre Point and the matching tower to the right appears to be Euston Tower. The distant white spire is likely All Souls, Langham Place, one of the few older landmarks still easily picked out beyond the expanding commercial cityscape. Between them, cranes and flat-roofed office buildings show just how much rebuilding was under way in London at the start of the 1970s, as church towers and Georgian or Victorian survivals were increasingly hemmed in by modern development.
