This south-westward view from St Paul’s in 1972 follows the Thames upstream towards Charing Cross, with the broad train-shed roof of Charing Cross station in the middle distance and Hungerford Bridge stretching across the river behind it. On the right is the great curved riverfront of Shell Mex House, while beyond the bridge the South Bank skyline includes the Shell Centre tower and the riverside buildings around the former Festival of Britain site. The scene has a very different feel from modern London: the river is wider and emptier, the embankments are lined with lower commercial blocks, and the skyline is still dominated by railway architecture, office slabs and a few post-war towers rather than glass high-rises.
