Looking south-east from St Paul’s in 1972, this wide skyline view takes in the busy Thames corridor from Cannon Street towards the Pool of London. In the foreground are the surviving twin towers and broad roof of Cannon Street station, while beyond them the Monument rises near the north end of London Bridge and Southwark Cathedral stands among the railway viaducts on the south bank. Tower Bridge is clearly visible further downstream, with the Tower of London to the left, and the crossing in the middle of the scene appears during the rebuilding of London Bridge, a major early-1970s change to this stretch of the river. The photograph is full of the layered character of pre-docklands London: churches, railway infrastructure, post-war office blocks, wharves and cranes, all packed tightly along both banks before the modern glass skyline arrived.
