Seen from high on St Paul’s, this 1972 view looks west across Newgate Street and King Edward Street towards Holborn and the West End, with the bomb-damaged shell and surviving tower of Christ Church Greyfriars prominent in the foreground. Beyond the clustered rooftops and office blocks, Centre Point rises on the right as one of the big new additions to London’s skyline of the 1960s, giving the scene a strong transitional feel: Wren churches and stone-faced commercial buildings below, modern high-rise London beyond. The photograph catches the City at a moment before later redevelopment softened the wartime scars nearby; Christ Church Greyfriars would not become the rose garden seen today until much later, so the remains here still read as part ruin, part working city backdrop.
