This 1972 photograph looks down from St Paul’s Cathedral onto Festival Gardens, the formal landscaped space laid out on the north side of the cathedral after the Second World War. The clipped lawns, flowerbeds, terraces and steps form a neat foreground beside the surrounding City streets, while beyond them traffic moves through the junctions below, including black cabs, small saloons, a red lorry and several bright red delivery vans. The view captures the contrast between the ordered cathedral precinct and the busy commercial streets around it, with a mix of older stone-faced buildings and plainer post-war office blocks showing how much the City had already changed by the early 1970s. It is a useful overhead record of Festival Gardens before later alterations to the surrounding streetscape and office environment.
