The formal beds and tree-lined paths of the gardens fill the foreground, with the small gardeners’ cottage at right, while above them runs a long stretch of shops, offices and department stores typical of central Edinburgh in the 1980s. The pale modern block at centre stands out against the darker older stone buildings around it, and beyond the city centre the skyline fades towards Leith and the Firth of Forth, giving the view both a strong sense of place and a clear reminder of how much of Edinburgh’s retail heart had already changed by the mid-1980s.
