Edinburgh from the Castle in 1956, looking north-east across Princes Street Gardens towards Princes Street, the New Town and the Firth of Forth beyond. Red-and-cream buses run along Princes Street below, while the dark Gothic spire of the Scott Monument rises at the right and the neoclassical frontage of the Royal Scottish Academy stands beside the gardens at the foot of The Mound. Farther back, the crowded roofscape of central Edinburgh gives way to the smoky industrial fringe of Leith and the waterfront, with the broad line of the Forth on the horizon. The formal gardens, busy shopping street and dense jumble of stone buildings combine to make this a strong mid-century view of the capital before later redevelopment altered much of the city-centre frontage.
