Edinburgh from the Castle in 1956, looking north-east across Princes Street and the New Town towards the Firth of Forth. In the foreground are the neoclassical buildings on The Mound, including the Royal Scottish Academy at the lower right, while beyond them the Scott Monument rises sharply above the city centre and the long Georgian and Victorian frontages of Princes Street stretch across the middle distance. Farther back, smoke and industrial haze hang over Leith and the waterfront, and on the skyline at the right stand the National Monument and Nelson Monument on Calton Hill. The view captures the capital at mid-century, with its grand civic architecture, dense rooftops and still-visible working port beyond.
