Looking east from Clifford’s Tower across the River Foss, this wide view captures York’s mid-century industrial and civic landscape. The large cooling tower in the distance belonged to York Power Station and dominated the skyline until its demolition in 1977; the station’s tall chimney survives today as a listed structure beside the Morrisons supermarket that now occupies part of the site. The River Foss curves past former industrial buildings, including the substantial brick telephone exchange on the left, which remains in use. To the right, the former Leethams corn mill warehouse—demolished in the 1930s—had already been repurposed as a Rowntree cocoa store and today survives as offices and flats. In the foreground are concrete foundations for planned government offices that were never completed and are now a car park, alongside visible wartime air-raid shelters. The scene shows a city balancing post-war industry, unrealised redevelopment plans and layers of reuse—many of which still shape this area today.
