This north-east view from Clifford’s Tower looks across the dense rooftops of central York toward Clifford Street, with the clock tower of York & Selby Magistrates’ Court standing prominently among the surrounding civic buildings. In the foreground area, the former fire station on Clifford Street—visible here before its demolition—occupied a site with a long institutional history. Its gable wall was originally part of a chapel, retained when the fire station was built and later preserved again during subsequent redevelopment. The fire brigade has since relocated to Kent Street, and the Clifford Street site has been rebuilt, while the magistrates’ court and much of the wider skyline remain familiar features of the city today.
