Looking north from Clifford’s Tower toward York Minster, the city’s layered streetscape unfolds around the junction of Castlegate and Tower Street. In the foreground stands St Mary’s Church, Castlegate, its tall spire rising above surrounding commercial buildings and garages. At street level, the corner premises belonged to Castle Garage, then an Austin dealer, with additional showroom space just out of view to the left. The business had earlier traded as a Chevrolet agent around 1930 before becoming part of Northern Motor Utilities in the 1930s, later passing to Parrishes, who relocated to Lawrence Street. Today, the Castle Garage buildings and the former Austin dealership have been cleared, replaced by modern hotel development, while the wider skyline—anchored by York Minster—remains instantly recognisable.
