Victoria station in 1971, with the busy forecourt framed by the grand railway hotel buildings behind the British Rail entrance canopy. Red London buses stand outside the station while pedestrians cross the road beneath the traffic lights, and the scene is packed with period commercial detail, including the prominent Overtons frontage on the right, its “Grillroom Restaurant” lettering, and the large rooftop slogan promising “Jets to Europe – a flying start”. The British Rail Victoria sign, the Victoria Bus Station lettering, the Caledonian Bula entrance sign beneath the canopy, and the mix of suits, coats and contemporary cars all root the view firmly in everyday central London in the early 1970s. It is a strong street-level view of Victoria before later redevelopment changed much of the area around the station approaches.
